English Premier League Game Week 1 Review

The English Premier 3oth season will kick off tonight as North London faltering Arsenal pays a visit to newcomers Brentford. With the Olympics and all other European games concluded, focus now shifts to the most followed league in the world.

This game week marks the start of what could be an exciting Premier League season for many of the followers of sports in Uganda. This weekend, all focus will primarily be on the English Premier League.  Make a prediction on all the 5 games chosen and the person who gets the highest points in two-game weeks will be rewarded.

Brentford vs Arsenal

Brentford nicknamed the Bees will host last season’s 8th placed Arsenal at the Brentford Community Stadium on Friday night. Brentford is playing at the top English league for the first time since 1947. The Bees have waited for over 74 years to play at the top level and playing against struggling North London Arsenal could be just the fixture that they need make a good start to their campaign at the top level.

Mikel Arteta will be without key players captain Aubameyang and Alexander Lacazette who will miss due to illness while defender Gabrielle will be out with an injury alongside midfielder Tomas Partey who suffered a knock during their preseason games. Arteta will now look too young forwards Gabriele Martinelli, Balogun for the goals.
The Gunners played 6 preseason games, winning two, losing three, and drawing just one. The North Londoners have been poor on the road and a visit to an attacking Brentford could prove to be a major test for Arteta’s side and his team’s credentials will be out for all to judge tonight.
On the other hand, Thomas Frank will be hoping that his striker Ivan Toney will come good with the goals against an Arsenal side that clearly lacks character.

Manchester United vs Leeds United

Arguably one of the oldest rivalries in the English football, Manchester United will host Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United at the Old Trafford. These ties have never been short of goals and when the two sides meet this weekend, it definitely promises to be exciting.
Manchester United is in buoyant form after quite an exciting preseason and will look to build on that in a season where they are viewed as title contenders for the 2021/22 season. United have signed one of the best young forwards Jadon Sancho, 4-time Champions League winner Rafael Varane and ultimately look like the side to beat this season.
The Red Devils won’t be with Edison Cavani, Dean Henderson, Amad Diallo Rashford and new signing Rafael Varane who is yet to complete the paper works for his transfer to the Red side of Manchester.
Leeds United has made new signings Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson coming in with Jack Harrison making his move to Elland Road permanent from league champions Manchester City.

Tottenham vs Manchester City

This is the biggest game of the weekend as North Londoners Tottenham Hotspurs who finished seventh in the previous campaign host Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola will have to wait for some of his key players to return but currently has 80% of his squad available for the season. The Citizens will be without some key players in injured Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden who are yet to return to training but should have the majority of their first team available to take on Nuno Espirito’s side.
Tottenham will have to depend hugely on Lucas Moura, Son, and Steven Bergwin for the goals in the event want-away captain Harry Kane fails to make it for the team seeing as he just resumed training.
This game will be very entertaining as both teams enjoy attacking and create goal-scoring opportunities and Manchester City will want to try and make amends for their defeat against Leicester City in the Community Shield over the weekend.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

European Champions will entertain Crystal Palace for a London derby this Saturday in their Premier League opener. The Blues come into this game after a midweek success after they defeated Spanish side Villareal in the UEFA Super Cup in the penalty shootouts.
Thomas Tuchel comes into this game with all his players available to his disposal apart from new signing Romelu Lukaku who made his return from International in Series A where he is a league winner.

Crystal Palace with new manager Patrick Viera has a huge task ahead of them for the season. Star player Zaha has stayed at the club but the question is whether that will be enough for them to stay in the league.
