Over the years, I have battled with waking up in the morning only to find that I have been added to a whole new WhatsApp group and the worst bit being that I didn’t even know the person.
Recently some of my friends have learnt how to ask me if I want to be added to a WhatsApp group but still, there are days I wake up and I don’t who the people buzzing my phone are.
WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Facebook, boasts of over 1.5 billion users globally.
Yesterday in what will be described as a landmark moment, WhatsApp announced that they had developed a new feature that allows their users to determine who will add them to any groups or completely block being added into a group till they have been given permission.
It becomes really difficult when you wake up to a whole new Wedding group and to a groom, bride or couple that you barely even know or to people that you last spoke to in 15 years.
The latest feature for Android and iOS devices allow users to decide who, if anyone, can add them to new groups.
To enable it, go to Settings in your app, then tap Account > Privacy > Groups and select one of three options: “Everyone,” “My Contacts,” or “My Contacts Except…”
The company had this to say regarding the new feature on the App and what lies ahead once a user is done with updating the App on Google Play store;
“My Contacts” means only users you have in your address book can add you to groups and “My Contacts Except” provides additional control for who among your contacts can add you to a group.
In those cases, an admin who can’t add you to a group will be prompted to send a private invite through an individual chat, giving you the choice of joining the group. You’ll have three days to accept the invite before it expires.
