FUBA Hands Basketball League 2025 to Managers

In a surprising turn of events, the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association has agreed to hand over control of the National Basketball League to the teams. This is a major change, as the national federation has always run the league.

The teams will now form a consortium and elect a president to run the league. There will be 12 teams for men and 12 for women, and each team will pay an annual fee of 1 million Ugandan shillings to participate. The consortium will also create a joint account to manage the league’s finances.

One of the biggest advantages of this new system is that the teams will have more control over things like finding sponsors and managing the league’s finances. This could lead to more money coming into the league, which has struggled financially in the past. The federation will now be able to focus on developing young talent and managing the national teams.

According to Mr. Hudson Ssegamwenge, the general secretary of the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association, he said that “We have given the NBL management to the managers going forward. They will be running the league with a committee for managers. They with be in charge of all the operations of the league games, managing gates, covering all game day expenses”

However, FUBA will be in charge of competition responsibilities. “But the technical aspects shall stay with the competition committee. They will run their financials and will have a separate account with signatories from managers” He noted.

How Will the New Basketball League Manage Sponsorship?

The Federation and the managers will both be tasked with looking for sponsors for the league. Sponsorship will be shared, which is 70-30 if the federation brings the sponsorship and 60-40 if the managers bring the sponsors. The League will have a separate bank account managed by team managers and with the Vice President of Finance of FUBA as one of the signatories.

When asked why they chose to go in this direction, he noted that they needed to focus on more development and national teams. “We saw it fit as the EXCOM, and the reasoning is that we need to embark and concentrate on other development programs plus the national teams, the league has been taking so much of our time and resources so we saw it fit to have the managers run it by themselves”

Of course, some challenges come with this change. It will take time for the teams to adjust to their new roles, and there’s always the risk of things not going smoothly at first. But if the teams can work together, this could be a positive development for Ugandan basketball.

Only time will tell if this is a positive change, but it’s an exciting development for Ugandan basketball. This new model gives the teams more control and could lead to more sponsorships coming into the league. We’ll have to wait and see if it leads to better results on the court and more fans returning to the games.
