Vipers Qualifies for the Uganda Cup Quarter Finals

After over 650 mins of football, Ugandan giants Vipers SC finally managed to find the back of the net in a 1-all draw against Wakiso Giants in the Uganda Cup round of 16.

Vipers under coach Bianchi had failed to find the back of the net but under the new stewardship of coach Alex Isabirye, the Venoms finally found the back of the net through Ashraf Mandela.

Ashraf Mandela met a perfect cross from brilliant Martin Kiiza and slotted it comfortably into the back of the net. The Venoms had to fight back after the home side took the lead through Sharif Kimbowa who connected with a brilliant pass from Marvin Nyanzi.

The game ended 0-0 in the first half with both teams struggling to find the back of the net but both getting close to breaking the deadlock. The Sharks will beat themselves up for not taking their chances after Norman Ojik saw his penalty saved before halftime. Moments later, Tom Matsiko hit the woodwork.

The two teams had to be separated by penalties after no one could capitalize during the normal time. Bright Anukani, Martin Kizza, Abubakar Lawal, and Hillary Mukundane scored for the visiting Vipers while George Kaddu, Rahmat Ssenfuka, and Moses Aliro converted their penalties for the Wakiso Giants.

What does this win for Vipers SC?

The win gives coach Alex Isabirye a perfect start to his campaign at St. Mary’s stadium in Kitende and he will be happy with how the boys have responded today. The result means that the Venoms have now knocked out their local rivals Wakiso twice in the Uganda cup.

For the Vipers, it means that they still have their sights on both the Uganda Cup and the Uganda Premier League. The wait will now be on chasing league leaders KCCA FC after the International break.

In other games played today, Bright Stars managed to defeat Kiyinda Boys 4-0 in the Uganda cup ensuring that they book themselves a spot in the quarterfinals as well.
