Which Premier League Team Will Qualify for the Champions League?

As the end to Liverpool’s best Premier League season comes closer, the struggle for the qualification for next season’s Champions League is still a tough task for a number of PL teams.

Manchester City winning their appeal against a two-year ban from European competitions at the Court of Arbitration for Sport recently has further made the struggle more difficult with Liverpool and Man City securing first and second position respectively.

Three teams namely Chelsea, Leicester City and Manchester United have been left to fight for the 2 remaining positions. Each team is left with 2 games to play with Chelsea currently at the third position with 63 points.

As the table stands, the on-form Manchester United and Leicester City both sit one point behind Chelsea. United’s visit to Leicester City in the last game week of the season is being billed as the “winner takes all’ showdown of the season.

However, it could be anything but that since Manchester United and Leicester may have an incentive to play out one of the most tepid and dull draws in recent memory. The key factor to all is what happens in the penultimate English Premier League matches which are just a couple of days away.

Who will qualify for Champions League?

If United beat West Ham and Leicester win at Tottenham, both teams will be level at 65 points. That will take both teams two points above Chelsea, who will need a win when they travel to Anfield to play against Liverpool.

But after seeing Arsenal victorious over the current Premier League champions, one would not blame Frank Lampard for being hopeful for a positive result against the Klopp’s. If Chelsea gets a draw or loss against Liverpool, It will mean whatever they do on the final day against Wolves will not be good enough if United and Leicester play out to a draw.

The other twists to this chase of Champions League qualification are that if Wolves are victorious and manage to win Europa League, Nuno Espirito’s men will also be in contention for the tournament next season.

It’s only a matter of time before we find out who else gets to represent England on the European stage next season.
