Liverpool Seals Its Place As English Premier League Champions

After a 30-year wait for an English top-flight title, Liverpool finally won the Premier League title last night in what will most definitely go down as the most obscure season in history.

They won their first Premier League trophy without kicking a ball, watching on in separate houses as Chelsea clinched a shock win over Manchester City to mathematically end the title race. There were no fans present, no parades in the street and all celebrations were strictly on social distancing protocols but that didn’t matter to them.

Speaking to Sky Sports, an emotional Jurgen Klopp said “I have no words. It’s the best thing I can imagine and more than I could have ever dreamed of. It’s unbelievable. Much more than I ever thought would be possible.”

Manchester City’s defeat on Thursday saw Liverpool break yet another Premier League record, winning a title with the most remaining games (7). This is the latest in a growing list of shattered benchmarks, and there are still seven games left to play in the season. Here’s what Jurgen Klopp’s dominant side have managed so far:

  • 23 – Most consecutive home wins (9th February 2019 – present)
  • 18 – Most consecutive wins (27th October 2019 – 24th February 2020). Joint with Manchester City.
  • 12 – Most Premier League assists in a season by a defender (Trent Alexander-Arnold). Joint with himself in 2018/19.
  • 7 – Winning a title with the most remaining games.
  • 5 – Jurgen Klopp: Most Premier League Manager of the Month awards in a single season.
  • Defeated all league opponents at least once in a season. Joint with Chelsea (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11 and 2017/18) and Manchester City (2017/18 and 2018/19).
  • The latest team to win the Premier League title (25th June).

Liverpool has sealed its spot for the 2019/20 season title

With seven games remaining in the season, there are still a number of Premier League records that can be broken by Jurgen Klopp’s merry band of marauding players.

The chances are he’ll opt to give some of his youth players a run out rather than risk overworking the team’s stars ahead of a gruelling 2020/21 title defence but even so we could see some seemingly unachievable records topple before the final game of the season.

Here are the Premier League records that could still fall into the realms of Anfield:

  1. Most points in a Premier League season (100) points.
  2. Most home points in a season (55points).
  3. Most scored goals in a season (106) Etc

After Klopp was appointed manager in 2015, he told his squad they must create their own history and encouraged them from time to time to keep playing better and fighting harder until they reached their goal.

From the looks of what the club has achieved so far, we can say they have done exactly just that. Apart from winning from the Premier League title, they also won the Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
