Chelsea has signed attacking midfielder Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year contract in a deal worth about £72m. The transfer of the 21-year-old midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen who is called an ‘Alleskonner’ to mean a player who can do everything (in German) follows Chelsea’s purchase of Timo Werner from another Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.
Chelsea also signed young French defender Malang Sarr who is going out on loan to gain more experience before he is involved with the first team squad probably next season depending on what he puts up while away.
“I am very happy and proud to be here. For me, it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!” Havertz said on signing for the London Club
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia on securing the signature of one of Germany’s hottest young talents for the blues said, “Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea. He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.”
Chelsea Director Happy to Have Kai Havertz at the Club
Havertz joined Bayer Leverkusen at the age of 11 in 2010 and made a name for himself in their youth set-up, receiving the Silver Fritz Walter Medal in 2016, given to the best Under-17 players in Germany.
He also made his senior debut in 2016 and became Bayer’s youngest Bundesliga debutant. He made his first Champions League start in the same season’s last 16. The midfielder scored 36 goals and contributed 25 assists in 118 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen.
His new deal at Chelsea will see him earn up to about €100million in 5 years according to reports.
To win the Premier League in recent past has shown that a team must have quality both on the pitch and on the bench and the signing of Kai Havertz just shows that Frank Lampard could have the midfield balance that he needs to change a game.
The player has been known for his creativity and the ability to find the back of the net. If Chelsea is able to have as many midfielders scoring to support the goals of the strikers, then they could have a huge say in the title conversation this season and his presence will be important considering they have the Champions League to also worry about.
