The Safaricom Board of Directors have resolved to appoint Peter Ndegwa as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer effective April 1, 2020.He replaces Bob Collymore who passed on mid of the year succumbing to cancer.
Ndegwa will be joining the telco company from Diageo, a global leader in the alcoholic beverages business, where he is currently serving as Managing Director of Continental Europe.
Mr Ndegwa has spent over 25 years in various roles within the financial services and fast moving consumer goods sectors in Africa and Europe.
He holds an MBA from the London Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
The company hinted yesterday that their next financial performance announcement is in 6 months and the new CEO would be here by then.
Currently, Safaricom’s interim CEO is Michael Joseph, who took over the capacity after the unfortunate passing of Bob Collymore back in July.
Mr Ndegwa will take over the reins of a wildly successful company that has massive revenues, profits and currently has the highest market capitalization at the Nairobi Stocks Exchange. He will be tasked with being the face of the company that has over 31 million subscribers and has a huge impact on the Kenyan economy.
“Instead of just looking at what governments can do, we need to acknowledge that large organisations can improve society and shift how people think and feel. For me, this is about working with others to build sustainable businesses that can make a difference in people’s lives,” Peter Ndegwa stated.
Peter’s announcement comes just a day after the telecom company made changes like reduced time at their service center shops, introduction of data and voice bundles that don’t expire among many other changes.
