James Bond actor Sean Connery has died today at the age of 90 after battling several illnesses for a long time now. His family confirmed.
Sir. Sean Connery best known for bringing the James Bond franchise to the big screens and regarded as the best to portray the role was a role model to many.
According to his son Jason Connery, Sir Sean Connery died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas where he had been living.
Connery, long regarded as one of the best actors to have portrayed the iconic spy, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000 and marked his 90th birthday only in August. His death was confirmed by his family, according to the BBC, which notes that the actor died in his sleep while in the Bahamas. He had been unwell for some time.
Besides making the big screen as James Bond, Connery acted in movies such as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, “The Wind and the Lion,” “The Man Who Would Be King” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” among many other great movies.
Jason Connery said his father “had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him” when he died overnight.
He said: “We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.
“A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”
Having been one of the supporters of the Scotland independence, the country’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons.”
