The inaugural U17 (under 17) CECAFA Girls Championship was held at the FUFA Technical Grounds in Njeru for 8 days from 9th to 17th December. Six sides from the region took part in the tournament which were placed in one group and played each other.
The eventual Champions, Uganda managed to win 4 games and drew one. They beat Burundi 4-0, Eritrea 10-0, Djibouti 11-0, Kenya 2-0 and drew 1-1 against runners-up Tanzania respectively.
The newly crowned FUFA Best Female player of the year 2019, Juliet Nalukenge contributed 9 goals on Uganda’s triumph which included a winner on match day five against Kenya.
The Tournament’s MVP, Fauzi Najjemba was also involved in a number of goals through out the the tournament to ensure that the title remained in the Pearl of Africa.
Najjemba was named the tournament Most Valuable Player while Daphine Nyayenga was voted the best goalkeeper.
This win made it a 2 in 2 for the girls having won a similar title organised by the Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) that is the COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship held in Mauritius in the month of September. Uganda beat South Africa 2-1 in a highly competitive final.
