The Uganda Rugby Sevens will be daring to go again this weekend when they embark on a campaign to qualify for the HSBC Hong Kong Rugby Sevens series in Uruguay.
In order to qualify for the Hong Kong Rugby sevens series, Uganda would need to finish in the best 8 teams after the two campaigns.
In Chile, Uganda finished 7th after two poor results against Hong Kong and the first-time loss to Tonga ensured that Uganda finished 7th in the tournament.
Can the Uganda Rugby Cranes have a decent showing in Uruguay?
In Uruguay, coach Tolbert Onyango and his boys know that it will be very crucial for him and the boys to maintain the discipline that they have exhibited so far in the series.
Coach Onyango says that his Uganda rugby sevens team has to improve on the one-on-one element of their game as that was a weakness that he identified in the 3 losses that his team succumbed to in the series.
The Uganda Cranes will also need to step up even more in their defensive element going into the weekend’s fixtures if they are to grab a spot for the HSBC Sevens series that will be happening in Hong Kong in October.
Philip Wokorach continues to show why he is the best rugby player that the country has had in the recent past with 5 tries out of the 13 tries that the team has made so far in the series.
The likes of Michael Wokorach, Desire Ayera, Pius Ogena, Arron Ofoyorwoth will have to bring their A-game too over the weekend to help Philip if the Uganda rugby sevens team is to attain its objectives of qualifying for the Hong Kong Sevens series.
This weekend, Uganda has been drawn in Pool B alongside Hong Kong, Jamaica, and Brazil.
- Pool A: Germany, Papua New Guinea, Uruguay, Mexico
- Pool B: Hong Kong, Uganda, Jamaica, Brazil
- Pool C: Japan, Zimbabwe, Italy, Paraguay
- Pool D: Chile, Tonga, Portugal, Colombia
A repeat of the performance in Vina del Mar or even better is enough for Uganda to earn a top 8 overall finish in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series and qualify for Hong Kong Sevens, where they will compete for one slot in the next season of the precious HSBC World Rugby Sevens series.
