Tiger Woods and Justine Thomas Team Up to Beat Europe Team in The Payne’s Valley Cup

There was a unique contest to mark the opening of Payne’s Valley Golf Course at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri dubbed the Payne’s Valley Cup. An 18-hole charity exhibition, which was meant to raise funds for the Stewart Family Foundation.

The contest had Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas (Team USA) compete against Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose (Team Europe), and it was broadcast on the Golf Channel.

The two teams competed in a match-play format, with a mix of four-ball, foursomes and singles, over 18 holes. They also played the bonus 19th hole, which is a par 3 designed by Big Cedar Lodge owner Johnny Morris. The hole, nicknamed “Big Rock at Payne’s Valley,” offered an island green backed by a limestone outcrop with a waterfall running down its face.

Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas edged Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose to the first win at the new course. The match divided into three sections. The first six-hole segment, won by McIlroy and Rose, was played using best-ball format.

Nos. 7-12 featured alternate shot and saw the Americans strike back to tie the match at one point apiece, setting up a singles’ showdown across the home stretch.

Woods faced off against Rose in a singles match, while Thomas went against McIlroy. Those two points were also halved, with Rose beating Woods, 1 up, and Thomas beating McIlroy, 2 up.

Both matches ended on the picturesque 123-yard, par-3 19th hole at Payne’s Valley, and with the match tied 2-2 Woods and Thomas got the win by virtue of a closest-to-the-pin tiebreaker after Thomas hit his final shot inside 9 feet.

This is expected to be Woods’ only competitive appearance until he defends his Zozo Championship title at Sherwood Country Club in late October.

Tiger Woods and Johnny Morris opened the new Golf Course at Big Cedar Lodges which is named in honour of Ozarks native Payne Stewart near Branson on Tuesday before the contest and brought along a few friends whom they showed around a scenic layout in the Ozarks which has been a project for Woods since he announced design plans for the course, a homage to Payne Stewart, in early 2017.

“I’m just so proud of everyone that came together to make all this possible, to have everyone here, it’s awfully special for me. Payne’s Valley is the first public golf course that I have designed. I couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out, it was an honour for me and my TGR Design team to work with Johnny Morris and Big Cedar Lodge on this spectacular golf course. I am thrilled that it will be featured during the Payne’s Valley Cup.” Woods said

The Payne’s valley golf course is the first public golf course designed by Woods’ TGR Design. Woods’ TGR Design company has built a handful of courses including Bluejack National near Houston and El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
