Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a new long-term contract until 2023 with Liverpool, the club have confirmed. This is a reward for the English man who has endured a long spell of injury.
The winger returned to first-team football at the end of last season after suffering a serious knee injury in April 2018 and was part of the squad that beat Tottenham to win the UEFA Champions League last season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool from Arsenal for £35million in 2017 and the 26-year-old has scored five goals in 47 games for the club.
Oxlade-Chamberlain told Liverpoolfc.com: ‘I’m excited – it’s been in the pipeline for a little while, so it’s nice to finally get it done and just extend my time here, which I am looking forward to.
‘I feel like I missed out on a year, which I did, so it’s really exciting for me to be able to sign. It’s something that I feel is an opportunity to give that year back and make up for lost time – and hopefully put in some good performances to make amends for not being around last year.
‘You’ve got to count your blessings every time you get an opportunity like this, you don’t get the chance to play for Liverpool Football Club every day. I am excited to be able to extend my time here.’
Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first start of the season – and first in 16 months – in the 2-1 victory over former club Southampton, and now has hopes to build on that performance.
‘I can promise the supporters that I’ll give them everything moving forward,’ he added.
‘There might be times where I have bad games and good games and moments where it’s not so good, but I’ll always work through those moments and give my everything to correct them and keep pushing this team forward.
‘I hope that I can do some special things like I did before I got injured and, most of all, be a part of this group of players that go on to hopefully win more things.
‘I’m excited to see what the future holds for us all and I look forward to seeing them every game moving forward.’
The new deal for Chamberlain comes at a time when his team will be taking his former employers Arsenal in a top 2 battle in the English Premier League.
Liverpool and the fans will be hoping that the new contract will help Chamberlain to have a fantastic showing against the Gunners in tomorrow’s top of the table encounter.
