The world’s sports media casts the votes with the Sportsman of the Year award going to the ‘sportsman who best demonstrates supreme athletic performance and achievement’.

Lewis Hamilton was beyond grateful for having been voted as the Laureus Sports personality of the year and thanked his team at Mercedes for all that they have done to help him get to where he is at the moment.

The award comes just days after the World Champion and team Mercedes unveiled their car for the 2020 season that should compete against Red Bull and Ferrari.

“Thank you Laureus Sport for this incredible award of World Sportsman of the Year,” he said.

“To think that my name is going to slot in alongside the legends, who have won this award before me, is really humbling.” “Thank you again.” A modest Lewis Hamilton stated.

He added: “I also want to thank Mercedes Benz, they’ve always given me huge support, having signed me at the age of 13, they allowed me the opportunity to live my dream.”

“I grew up in a sport that has really given my life meaning,” said Hamilton.
“I’m so, so grateful for what it has provided me. But I’ve actually grown up in a sport that has very little to no diversity.
“I think it’s an issue that we’re continually facing. It’s all of our responsibility to use our platform for that, just that, really pushing for gender equality, gender inclusivity and really making sure that we’re engaging and really trying to represent where the world is today.”

As for Messi, the Barcelona forward claimed a record-breaking sixth Ballon d’Or as he was named football’s best.
