Former Uganda Cranes Captain Fantastic Jimmy Kirunda Passes On at 70

Arguably one of the most important players in the Uganda Cranes team back in the 70s, Jimmy Kirunda today breathed his last after he collapsed near Hotel Le Grande in Bwaise, a Kampala suburb.

According to Football256, Jimmy was nicknamed Kaiser because of his huge admiration for Germany center back and great Franz Beckenbauer and his leadership and game reading was second to none within the ranks of the national team.

Despite being the central defender and best at his position, he was also known for consistently overlapping and seeking to score goals for the national team and the winner against Ethiopia in the 1977 AFCON qualifiers rings in the heads of many. That goal meant that Uganda qualified for the 1978 African nations tournament which would take the country over 30 years to make another appearance at the continents’ most prestigious tournament.

What Accolades did Jimmy Kirunda Achieve in Football?

He won the CECAFA tournament 5 times with the Uganda Cranes team that he captained for over 10 years. He won the tournament in 1969, 1970, 1973, 1976 & 1977 as a player then went on to win it thrice as a coach in 1989, 1990 & 1992.

He won the Uganda football league 1978 where he went on to score 32 goals which was an incredible feet for a defender but Jimmy Kirunda was no ordinary defender.

One of the most respected and adored fans by KCC fans, it came as a shock when Jimmy Kirunda swapped shirts and joined rivals SC Villa in 1982.

The captain only had a professional stint in one club at that was in Abu Dhabi Sports a move which he made after the 1978 AFCON tournament in which Uganda finished as runners up.

He won three league titles with KCC (1976, 1977 and 1981) and two Uganda Cups (1980 & 1984). He also won a league title with Villa (1982) and one Uganda Cup (1983)
