As the technology sector continues to grow, the USB Promoter Group has announced the USB 4 version 2.0 as the newest USB standard on the market that will offer some impressive upgrades over the current one.
What makes the USB 4 version 2.0 amazing is that it will be able to double the available bandwidth on current standards which are locked at 40 Gbps to a blazing fast 80 Gbps (gigabytes per second).
The doubled bandwidth makes USB 4 Version 2.0 as one of the highest-performing connectivity standards on the market, which exceeds all current USB Thunderbolt standards, including Thunderbolt 4 which is limited to 40 Gbps – like USB4.
The technology behind USB 4 version 2’s fast speeds is attributed to a new physical layer architecture that has been added to USB4 which utilises the existing 40 Gbps passive cables built into USB4 Type-C and adds newly-defined 80Gbps USB Type-C active cables to reach that 80 Gbps mark.
The new version will definitely come in handy for those that are power users more so those who deal with video editing and design tasks on a daily basis. The technology will also be a great boost for gamers looking to take advantage of the fast speeds.
Aside from that, the new version also adds other bonus updates to its display functionality which include a bandwidth boost beyond 20Gbps for USB 3.2 data tunnelling when using alt modes such as DisplayPort mode. USB4 Version 2.0 has also been updated to feature the latest versions of the DisplayPort standard and PCIe spec.
USB 4 Version 2.0 to Offer 80 Gbps of Bandwidth
Those worried about backwards capability shouldn’t be as the new version also works and supports all previous revisions, including the original USB4 standard, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.
The USB group says Version 2.0 was created specifically to benefit users running a number of different devices through a single USB port, including docks, high-performance displays and more.
“Once again following USB tradition, this updated USB4 specification doubles data performance to deliver higher levels of functionality to the USB Type-C ecosystem,” said Brad Saunders, USB Promoter Group Chairman.
“Solutions seeing the most benefit from this speed enhancement include higher-performance displays, storage, and USB-based hubs and docks,” Saunders added.
“This update is specifically targeted at developers at this time. Branding and marketing guidelines will be updated in the future to include USB 80 Gbps both for identifying certified products and certified cables,” said the USB Promoter Group.
So, if you consider yourself a power user or a developer who runs a dedicated and powerful PC or laptop that incorporates multiple DisplayPort monitors, USB drives, ethernet and more, then the new USB 4 version 2 is going to rock your world.
