Apple finally unveiled its long-awaited iPhone 12 officially during its recent virtual October event, adding to it a selection of three other devices alongside it that is the iPhone 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max respectively.
The online community was buzzing constantly and filled with joy when the American company finally dropped the official news about its new iPhone 12 device, whose release date is set for October 23 with pre-orders already in the pipeline.
Apple also confirmed that its entire range of iPhone products will be 5G-ready in 2020, allowing users to enjoy fast downloads and browsing speeds on their phones without any hassle.
Apart from 5G, the four handsets feature a clean new design, and a range of vibrant colours to pick from including tweaks to the rear camera, performance and a lot more.
The iPhone 12 will be starting at $799 (UGX 2,968,880), which is $100 more than the previous 11 series, which could be due to the addition of 5G technology to the device and another set of sleek features too.
Those dying to get their hands on Apple’s new handset will be able to pre-order the iPhone 12 this coming Friday, October 16 though, you won’t be able to do so for 12 Mini until November 6, and will be out on November 13.
According to Apple, their new iPhone 12 dawns a more powerful A14 Bionic processor, an advanced dual-camera system, and a Super Retina XDR display with the Ceramic Shield front cover.
The iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch display with a notch at the top just like the recent handsets. If you’re interested in a smaller design, then you will have to opt for the 12 mini. The devices also come in a variety of colours which include black, white, red, green and blue, dawning an aluminum frame with less rounded edges.
Apple unveils its 5G iPhone 12
Taking aside the gorgeous 6.1-inch screen, just like the previous models, the iPhone 12 is IP68 water and dust resistant too and features a small indent below the power button which is a 5G antenna that allows the phone to connect to networks through its aluminium frame.
When it comes to specs, the handset, of course, is 5G-ready, which has become a norm now as companies begin to take on the new technology.
“The arrival of 5G marks the beginning of a new era for iPhone and we’re thrilled to bring these impressive new capabilities to our customers with iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“We’re once again pushing the boundaries to deliver incredible computational photography advancements, Super Retina XDR displays, and the biggest leap in durability in iPhone history with the new Ceramic Shield front cover. Available in two great sizes, iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini take design to a new level in a new form factor that’s as beautiful as it is durable, and makes it easier than ever for customers to find the perfect iPhone to fit their lifestyle.”
Apple has also added the MagSafe technology, which offers faster and safer charging speeds using high-powered wireless charging and an all-new ecosystem of accessories that easily attach to iPhone 12.
Fast-charging is also available on the phone, which can get the battery from zero to 50% in half an hour, but there’s a catch. You’ll need to buy a separate 20W charger to be able to get that feature. (I can sense your anger right from your seat, believe me)
Faster and efficient A14 Bionic
When it comes to what’s underneath the device, it’s powered by Apple’s new faster and more efficient A14 Bionic and is said to be the first chip in the smartphone industry built on a 5-nanometer process.
The A14 Bionic also has the fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50 per cent compared to the fastest competing smartphone chips, enabling console-quality gaming experiences, powerful computational photography, and more, while delivering great battery life, according to Apple.
You have the choice of getting either 64GB, 128GB, or the 256GB storage model, depending on what suits you best though you’re better off with anything more than 64GB since it isn’t a lot of space, plus there’s no microSD support. The phone also comes running iOS 14 out of the box, so you’ll be able to enjoy all of the features that were introduced in last month’s big software update.
The iPhone 12 comes with a dual rear camera. There’s a 12MP wide camera with an f/1.6 aperture and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter with a f/2.4 aperture and 120-degree field of view. Plus, you get the new Smart HDR 3 tech that helps you capture photos with improved colours and contrast too.
It also adds the previous iPhone existing features such as Portrait mode, 4K video recording at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second and a digital zoom up to 5x. The front selfie camera has 12MP with a f/2.2 aperture.
Those that didn’t like the Face ID unlock feature in the previous 11 series are doomed, as it’s here to stay. The iPhone 12 has no fingerprint scanner either but we expect better improvements to it this time around.
This time around, you won’t be getting a charging brick or a pair of earbuds. Apple has eliminated the power adapter and EarPods completely from the iPhone 12 box, and these accessories must be purchased separately. All iPhone models now ship with a USB-C to Lightning cable by default, with Apple doing away with the USB-A version as well.
The box itself will also be slimmer too with the device, charging cable and documentation on the phone being the only things Apple needs to include in the packaging.
To sum things up, remember that the iPhone 12 is at a starting price of $799 for the 64GB model, with you expected to pay extra cash if you need the 128GB or 256GB models. Same applies to the 12 mini too which starts at $699 (UGX 2,597,305) for 64GB of storage, with 128 and 256GB storage options available.
The $699 and $799 starting price points for the iPhone 12 models are only for Verizon and AT&T customers in the United States, as Verizon and AT&T are offering $30 device discounts for existing customers in partnership with Apple. For SIM-free models or models purchased from T-Mobile or Sprint, pricing on the iPhone 12 mini starts at $729 and pricing on the iPhone 12 starts at $829.
The new iPhone 12 models will be launching in the United States, UK, Japan, Australia, China, Germany, and more than 30 other countries and regions starting on October 16, with pre-orders to kick off at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
