The series focuses on Sabrina Spellman’s re-imagined origin story, her friends and family while she struggles with being half-witch, half-mortal in her dark coming of age story and how she stands against the evil forces that threaten her and her family.
20-year-old Kiernan Shipka stars as Sabrina Spellman, a beautiful naïve little girl who is loved by everyone around her except her own witch community.
She plays the part well, combining the right amount of innocence, love, stubbornness that can make you want to break your screen and darkness that makes you respect her. That and the very close resemblance to Emma Watson in some scenes.
Sabrina is 16 years of age in the series and attending school at Baxter High, you might think this would make it your typical “CW like” series full of love and heart battering drama, but it is not, at least not entirely.
Netflix and Warner Bros went really dark on this one, just like they tried with Lucifer Season 4. Though this one beats the last season of Lucifer hands down. It makes me want to see more such collaborations with Netflix like that.
Yet it also makes you wonder if Warner Bros filled the void Disney left when they pulled all the Marvel shows from Netflix after starting their own content streaming platform, Disney Go.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina got me hooked to all two full seasons and one Christmas special episode. The story is well made, the colours are dark enough, lots of orgies and people were dying in surprising ways (don’t judge me).
Honestly, I couldn’t help but think that this is how the Charmed 2018 reboot should have been. In fact, Warner Bros should transfer it from CW and bring it to Netflix. That ought to make things interesting.
Don’t expect your basic wand whooshing here, but ugly beasts that creep on you when you don’t expect it. Villains that are often less talked about in dark tales and religion, lots and lots of reverse religious perversion by the Church of Night.
If you are one of those religious stick-ups, I don’t encourage you to watch this, you will want to rip the director and writers’ throats out.
If you want a TV series that will keep you wondering what happens next and tickles all your knowledge in occult lore, most-def, you must watch “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”.
