Where to Find a Resilient Job In New York During this Covid-19 Period

If you are looking for a new career in New York that comes with great job security, the best place to look is the tech industry. New York is one of the two biggest tech hubs in the US, the other one being San Francisco.

The Big Apple is home to plenty of emerging startups, both in and out of the tech space. Wall Street is also home to the biggest financial sector in the country, and perhaps even the world. All of these companies need skilled programmers.

New York’s booming tech industry has proven to be resilient, even during recent economic hardship brought about by Covid-19. So, if you are looking for a job that is in high demand and safe from even global health pandemics, then you need to make the switch to tech.

The first step in making this transition is to learn how to code. Coding skills are essential in almost all disciplines in the tech industry. Each tech job requires knowledge of different programming languages. For example, a career as a Front End Web Developer requires knowledge of the programming languages JavaScript and HTML, whereas a Software Engineer needs to know C++ and Python.

Coding Bootcamps

Don’t sweat it if you don’t know how to code. Breaking into the tech industry no longer requires earning a computer science degree. Instead, you can learn the coding skills you need in just a couple of months by attending a coding bootcamp.

These are short, intensive programs that help career switchers become tech industry-ready programmers in no time. Many coding schools offer their bootcamps online. If you live in New York or are looking to relocate here, you have access to almost every major coding bootcamp.

With a whopping 45 coding bootcamps in New York, there is bound to be one, if not several, that fit your career aspirations. There are currently 19,000 open tech jobs in New York, indicating that there is a huge demand for new programmers in the city. With an annual salary of $133,000, New York bootcamps grads are the second-highest-paid programmers in the country, second only to San Francisco.

Let’s take a look at some of these programming job vacancies in New York.

Software Engineering

Software Engineers are the masterminds behind the computer programmers that power our work and personal lives. Every time we create a new word document, keep track of our budgets on a spreadsheet, play a video game, or stream the latest show on Netflix, we are using a product created by a Software Engineer.

Software engineers use the programming languages of C++, JavaScript and Python to build computer-based software products. Software engineering bootcamps offered by Thinkful can teach you the programming skills needed to begin your career.

Web Development

In a web development career, you write the code that creates web site design—called front end development—or runs the website—called back end development.

Front End Developers use programming languages like JavaScript and HTML to create the user experience (UX). This is what someone sees on their screen when they visit a website; it is also called the “client-side.”

Back End Developers, on the other hand, are responsible for programming the functionality of the website. They do this through programming languages like Python, Ruby and Java. This is also called the user interface (UI), as it is what powers the website experience.

You may also be interested in becoming a Full Stack Developer so that you can front end and back end website development. A full-stack bootcamp from Springboard can teach you these skills.

Web development is also one of the fastest-growing fields in the tech industry, with expected job growth of 31 percent by the year 2028.
