Telegram Is Introducing A Premium Monthly Subscription Option

Telegram, which is one of the most robust and feature-rich messaging apps on market today is launching Telegram Premium, a monthly subscription-based option for its users.

According to Pavel Durov’s public channel on Telegram, the premium option is targeting users who want additional features that can’t be offered in the current free version of the app due to costs and other technical reasons.

The privacy-focused social messaging platform, which was launched almost 9 years ago by Pavel Durov is now taking the monetization route to help drive revenue to the business which is completely understandable since they have to find ways to make money.

The surprising bit though is that the founder of the app had in the earlier years said that he wouldn’t allow the platform to be monetized in the same ways Meta and other platforms have done for their apps and services but now the tune has now changed.

Even though Telegram is completely free, the messenger app hadn’t been fully and officially monetized, although the company had been exploring support for ads like sponsored messages in the public channels to test run things out.

It is also reported that Telegram Premium will cost $4.99 per month and will offer more features to users by removing certain limits such as upload size and faster downloads to mention but a few.

Since the day Telegram was launched almost 9 years ago, we’ve been giving our users more features and resources than any other messaging app. A free app as powerful as Telegram was revolutionary in 2013 and is still unprecedented in 2022. To this day, our limits on chats, media and file uploads are unrivalled.

And yet, many have been asking us to raise the current limits even further, so we looked into ways to let you go beyond what is already crazy. The problem here is that if we were to remove all limits for everyone, our server and traffic costs would have become unmanageable, so the party would be unfortunately over for everyone.” – A message shared by Pavel Durov on his public channel.

Durov adds: “After giving it some thought, we realized that the only way to let our most demanding fans get more while keeping our existing features free is to make those raised limits a paid option. That’s why this month we will introduce Telegram Premium, a subscription plan that allows anyone to acquire additional features, speed and resources. It will also allow users to support Telegram and join the club that receives new features first.”

The details regarding the Telegram premium plan are still sketchy as of now, and we are yet to get more details but so far these are the few things we know about features included in the plan;

  • 4 GB upload size
  • Faster download speed
  • Voice-to-Text conversion
  • No Ads.
  • Unique reactions
  • Premium Stickers.
  • Advanced chat management
  • Profile badge
  • Animated avatars
  • Additional application icons.

The messaging platform also stated that existing users shouldn’t worry as all existing features will remain free, and there is plenty of new free ones coming. Even users who don’t subscribe to Telegram Premium will be able to enjoy some of its benefits, for example, the ability to view extra-large documents, media and stickers sent by Premium users, or tap to add Premium reactions already pinned to a message to react in the same way.

Durov, however, stated that even though the platform is finding ways to monetize and add ads into the app, Telegram should still be funded by its users. His post read: “While our experiments with privacy-focused ads in public one-to-many channels have been more successful than we expected, I believe that Telegram should be funded primarily by its users, not advertisers. This way our users will always remain our main priority.”

Telegram Premium is already live in the beta version for Android, but you cannot subscribe to the service at the moment which is expected to launch this month.
