Manchester United have announced the signing of Brazilian left back Alex Telles from Portuguese powerhouses FC Porto. The defender emerged as a major target for Man United after the club decided to pull the plug on the move for new Tottenham Hotspurs left back Sergio Reguilon earlier this month.
The Brazilian goes to Old Trafford for a fee of 15m euros (£13.6m) plus 2m euros (£1.8m) in add-ons, a compromise for both clubs, who previously stood around six million apart in their valuations of the player, with United insisting on not paying more than 12 million, while Porto held out for close to 20 million.
Telles said that the brilliant start to life in Manchester by former Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes played a key role in convincing him that the move was right for him.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær said Telles was an explosive modern fullback who would increase the attacking threat of the team down the left flank, while offering solidity at the back.
The 27-year-old increases the number of left back options at United and will be looking to usurp first choice Luke Shaw, who has suffered a spate of injuries in the last five years hence stunting the development of the potential that the team saw in him before his move from Southampton as a Patrice Evra replacement back in 2014.
Telles has won one cap for Brazil and has scored 21 goals in 127 games for Porto
Alex Nicolao Telles is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a left-back for the Brazil national team. He is highly rated in Brazil and was rewarded with a place in the 2013 Brasileirão Team of the Year.
Telles, who has won one cap for Brazil, has scored 21 goals in 127 games for Porto. He is scheduled to have his medical on Monday before signing a four-year contract with option of a further year.
