Samsung Releases a Series of New Devices

Samsung launched a series of new devices this week unveiling the latest generation of its foldable smartphones including the smartwatches too on Wednesday while keeping prices the same despite rising costs in materials and shipping.

Among its new releases, we have the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Watch series 5 which are all quite interesting in their own way.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

The Galaxy Z Fold 4, which costs $1,799 stands out as the most interesting of them all. It is the size of a notepad and opens like a notebook, however, aside from just that one stand-out feature, there isn’t a huge update that would get you all excited.

Regardless, there have been a few changes to the design and other components within the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Fold 4 this time around is slightly sleeker, with a slimmer hinge and bezels and weighs a little less than 263 grams compared to the Z Fold 3’s 271 grams. A few grams off but still, that’s a pretty heavy phone and no surprise there since it doubles as both a phone and a small tablet making it a multitasking powerhouse.

The hinges have also been improved and slightly redesigned so that it stays still while in Flex mode. In a nutshell, to sum things up, the Galaxy Fold 4 comes with a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset with 12GB of RAM, starting with 256GB of storage and going all the way up to 1TB.

The Fold 4 also remains IPX8 rated for water resistance and has a newer 50-megapixel main camera with a more useful 3x telephoto camera similar to that of the S22 series. Aside from that, it has the same OLED panels with 120Hz adaptable refresh rates and ships with One UI 4.1.1 based on Android 12L, which Samsung says has been improved for the multitasking experience.

Samsung also stated that the new Fold 4 series is more durable than its predecessor. It has a 45% stronger main display with smaller bezels, a thinner hinge and upgraded cameras on the back and below the display.

Z Flip 4

Considered to be one of the few impressive devices released by Samsung years ago but is still riddled with a few issues. The Z Flip 4 remains with its square-like design when closed and opens to the size of a regular smartphone. The starting price for the Flip 4 is $999.

According to Samsung, the Z Flip 4 has an improved battery plus an added storage capacity of 512GB. It also comes with upgraded 12-megapixel camera hardware and a stronger main display. There are also other meaningful upgrades such as a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip (paired with 8GB of RAM) and a 6.7-inch screen with a 120Hz variable refresh rate.

Just like all the other devices released by Samsung in 2022 as flagships, the Z Flip 4 has a better display structure and stronger ultra-thin glass with an IPX8 water resistance rating. For a foldable smartphone, the Flip 4 looks like a better attractive option compared to Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Series 5

Coming in two different tiers, Samsung unveiled both the Galaxy Watch 5 ($279.99) and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro ($449.99) respectively at the Unpacked event. Both Galaxy watch series 5 devices boast bigger batteries, faster charging, and increased durability to boot compared to their predecessor.

The basic Galaxy Watch 5 is an entry-level flagship while the Pro is meant to be a more premium version aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. Samsung this time around removed the physical rotating bezel leaving a more subtle touch bezel on the new series 5 watches.

The Galaxy Watch 5 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes with a 284mAh battery, while the Pro comes in a single 45mm size plus a larger 590mAh battery. All the watches are powered by the same 1.18GHz Exynos W920 processor, with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

They both also have an improved version of the 3-in-1 BioActive sensor first introduced on the Watch 4, which enables ECGs, heart rate, and body composition analysis.

Samsung says that the improved sensor adds more advanced sleep tracking features to the Watch 5, including personalized sleep coaching. You also get built-in GPS, contactless payments, optional LTE, Bluetooth 5.2, and Wi-Fi. Both watches also feature 5ATM and IP68 dust and water resistance.
