Hantavirus Could be More Deadly than Coronavirus

A new virus, known as Hantavirus has sent shockwaves on the internet after a Chinese man died from it causing authorities to initiate a serious lockdown.

As the world rages a battle against COVID-19 (Coronavirus), a new deadly virus has caused panic in China. The Chinese man killed by the virus was reportedly traveling by bus in the Yunan province when he suddenly died.

The medical authorities carried out tests that revealed the presence of the deadly hantavirus and now a lot of efforts are being taken to test the other 32 co-passengers.

The Hantavirus is actually not a new one as claimed by the excessively shared content and posts by people on Whatsapp and other social platforms but it has been in existence for a while now.

Unlike the coronavirus, the hantavirus is not communicable from humans to humans but rather from rodents to humans according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

If a person happens to touch the urine, saliva, feces or nesting materials of a rat or other rodents and then touch their mouth, nose or eyes the virus can affect him.

The virus is spread once a human gets in contact with an infected rodent’s urine, saliva, feces or nesting materials.

Each hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host species and is spread to people via aerosolized virus

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide.

The symptoms of hantavirus are;

  • Fever greater than 101◦F, chills, body aches, headaches.
  • Nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain.
  • New rash (faint red spots)
  • A dry cough followed by rapid onset of breathing difficulty.
Despite having similar symptoms, people have been encouraged not to fear the hantavirus as it’s not as deadly as the coronavirus which has infected and killed many in the past few months worldwide.
