Elon Musk Jokes About Saving Manchester United By Buying It Given It’s Recent Woes

Elon Musk this week made a tweet that got so many people talking about the possibility of him buying the Manchester United football club and saving it from its recent dilemma of poor performances.

The tech billionaire tweeted on Tuesday evening that he was purchasing the Manchester United football club, which caused a bit of excitement online with some taking it as actual truth that he was indeed planning on doing so.

Elon Musk, who is very well known for being eccentric and most often a good troll on Twitter definitely outplayed some of his followers including the media this week when they took his statement about buying Manchester United as an actual fact.

Elon, who is currently embroiled in a lawsuit over his bid to buy Twitter, wasn’t being serious when he made the tweet at the time. The 51-year-old Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who has a habit of posting provocative statements on social media for fun, said: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome,” in a reply to an earlier tweet about supporting both of America’s two major political parties.

Manchester United has been under a lot of pressure from fans lately, with many protesting the team’s management for poor performance in recent years, as well as their involvement in a plan to start a new “Super League” of Europe’s richest teams.

Given what’s happening at the team, and how pissed off the fans are, a tweet from Elon Musk suggesting how he wanted to buy the club definitely caused a bit of panic given the billionaire’s track record of using Twitter to make jokes and troll the media which follows his tweets closely.

In 2018, Musk’s own tweets got him in a lot of trouble when he made certain comments about taking Tesla private which caused an impact on the US Securities and Exchange Commission, leading to securities fraud charges, and a settlement that included appointing a “Twitter sitter” to approve Musk’s Tesla-related tweets.

Analysts suggest that even though Elon Musk’s latest tweets were just a joke and were made when US markets were closed, they could attract regulatory attention given that Manchester United securities are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

“When someone in his position makes comments about buying an entity, people start speculating: ‘is he joking, not joking, half-joking?’” said Hui Chen, an ethics and compliance consultant who served as the first compliance counsel expert at the US Department of Justice. “His actions have a major impact on markets and he really needs to be cognizant about the potential implications.”

According to Forbes, Manchester United is currently valued at $4.6 billion, and it is currently led by the six children of late American businessman Malcolm Glazer, who took a controlling stake in the franchise in 2005.

Manchester United won its last Premier League title under legendary coach Alex Ferguson in the 2012-13 season and has since fallen behind rivals Manchester City, which has won four of the past five titles.
