Los Angeles Dark-Pop act RIVALS dropped a new certified banger, “Dangerous,” a track dripping with the energetic confidence the quartet has come to be known for. Those who have followed the band’s career have lately seen RIVALS take off running – through skyrocketing TikTok engagement and being discovered by MTV News – the band has truly become “Dangerous.”
With the drop of the new track, RIVALS reaches a new milestone in their career by announcing their signing to Sound Talenr Group. RIVALS hits the road in July (tour dates can be found here), kicking off with a headliner then followed by a direct support slot in the fall. On the new single, vocalist Kalie Wolfe states:
“I’ve been feeling new energy lately, something that I’ve finally accepted and is letting into my heart, soul, and my music. As I grow internally and my heart expands, I have realized something. I am amazing. I have fought, clawed, and become the person I wished I was when I was younger. I’m not letting people walk on me, I’m not backing down, and I want my energy to grow with me on this amazing journey through life. RIVALS’ latest album, Sad Looks Pretty on Me, exists in two worlds. The Los Angeles quartet — vocalist Kalie Wolfe, bassist Sebastian Clarke, guitarist Micket Woodle, and drummer Josh Alves — draw a wobbly line between blossoming pop-rock and wilting post-hardcore, often alternating between sides for earth-shattering effects.
By wearing their inspirations proudly (and enlisting the help of contemporaries), RIVALS clamour for the attention of both radio listeners and bedroom moshers. Their explosive live act—which has garnered the attention of audiences nationwide—will wear this new set of songs.
Try this on for size: how many songs have you heard that begin like “Fake Rich,” out of the gate with stuttering percussion, but end up turning the corner with a gnarly breakdown courtesy of Cane Hill frontman Elijah Witt? It’s a perfect distillation of the band’s core ethos: create a club hit, curl it around sneering guitars and urgent drums, and tear it down.
While this mentality of pop-metal destruction is relentless and well-stocked here, like on the pitch-shifted alt-metal of “On the Loose” and the dirtied, jagged synth-rock of “Little Mistakes,” Wolfe and company are concerned with the creation, too.
