Liverpool have emerged as the preferred destination for RB Leipzig star striker Timo Werner if he is to leave the Bundesliga leaders.
With the goals that Werner has scored this campaign, Leipzig are top of the charts in Germany and he reportedly has a release clause of £51million, according to German paper Bild.
The German newspaper goes on to report that the clause will decrease each year until his contract runs out in June 2023. This puts Liverpool right in the perfect place for a transfer.
Could Liverpool snatch Timo Werner from Chelsea?
It appears likely he will try to force a Premier League move before then, according to Bild. The 23-year-old has been in stunning form this season with 20 goals in just 18 appearances in the league which has helped RB Lipzig climb to the top of German Bundesliga and seen him get a lot of attention across Europe.
He is seen as an ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s juggernaut, and there are already good relations established between the two clubs following Naby Keita’s move in 2018.
He would come into a team that already has Salah, Mane and Firmino who have found such an incredible partnership that has seen Liverpool take on the challenge for the title this season.
Prior to last week, all reports had indicated that Chelsea were the only club that was interested in the German and they were looking to capture him during the January transfer window.
Werner recently admitted to Bild that he is attracted by a potential move to England: ‘The Premier League is certainly the most interesting league, you have to say.
‘There is a certain flair to watching the English league and playing there.’
It is believed that he is very interested in playing with Jurgen Klopp’s side who play a very interesting brand of football branded as the heavy metal.
Whether the deal happens or not is completely a question for another day but as it stands now, Liverpool are well in on course to sign the forward should they choose to get him.
