After three years of work and hard work, the team brought to a life an extraordinary piece of work by showcasing off their fairly realistic robot Jia Jia in Hefei, China before an audience.

Jia Jia surprised the audience with her first greeting phrase, “Hello everyone, I’m jia Jia. Welcome!”

Jia Jia has the ability to talk and interact with humans, as well as make some facial expressions. She can even tell you off if she senses you’re taking an unflattering picture of her. “Don’t come too close to me when you are taking a picture. It will make my face look fat,” she told someone trying to capture her photo during the presscon.

Even though she doesn’t look that realistic, she still gives any on lookers a surprise since the team spent a long time working on her speech patterns, texture and design. Not forgetting the mouth movements as she speaks and eye glances around the environment.

Chen Xiaoping, the team director said they paid particular attention to her eye movements and lip synchronization. He told reporters at the unveiling that the team’s next step is to make it possible for her to laugh and cry.

The team also plans to give Jia Jia deep learning and facial recognition capabilities in the near future. There are no plans by the team to mass produce the robot yet and are still trying to make more improvements to the first model. We may not see their work become publically available yet.

Even without emotions, Jia Jia is less unsettling compared to the robotic Scarlett Johansson, created earlier this year by Hong Kong robot builder Ricky Ma.

Jia may not be a perfect representation of a realistic humanoid but an opening to what the near future may bring as far as technological advancement is concerned. This Chinese team of researchers has created an opening for great leaps in robotics and we hope to see even more exciting projects ahead.
