The World Trade Center has come one step closer to becoming the tallest building in the western Hemisphere Thursday when its crowning spire was hoisted to the top of the skyscraper.

The gleaming pinnacle of glass and steel began its slow ascent shortly before 11am, climbing steadily up the side of the building with an American flag attached to its base streaming in the breeze.

The final pieces of the spire were lifted to a temporary work platform just before noon and will be installed upright by iron workers at a later date, according to officials from The Port Authority if New York and New Jersey.
