Real Madrid and Mariano have rekindled their love affair after the Spanish giants triggered the buy back clause in the player’s contract. He will be joining the Spanish outfit this week.
A few weeks ago, Mariano made it clear that he would be unable to turn down the advances of Real Madrid if they came calling again.
It had not been discussed at that time whether or not Los Blancos would make a move for their former player’s services. “You can’t say no to Real Madrid,” he said via social media.
His name has been the subject of much discussion throughout the European market this summer.
After a great season with Lyon, the French club were open to letting the Spaniard leave if they could master a profit from the deal. It was the logical decision given that the player’s allegiance was already with Real Madrid.
In fact, they had initially valued him at 70 million euros and were expecting an offer from the Premier League close to that figure, but that didn’t happen and so when Madrid came knocking, it was just a matter of time.
Mariano is a good fit for thee sporting and economic plans of Los Blancos and had never ruled out a return when asked about it.
The hint that he dropped on August 11 has now become a reality for the player, who has a second chance in the Spanish capital.
The striker was part of Zinedine Zidane’s squad in 2016/17 but at that time, the attacking options were many and the Spaniard would not see much playing time.
Aside from Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, there was also Alvaro Morata, Marco Asensio, James Rodriguez and Isco, he found it difficult fitting in Zidane’s famous B team.
Now he returns with renewed confidence and a clearer path to first team football, in addition to the full faith of Julen Lopetegui.
Julen made a personal call to Mariano to assure him that he would be given more playing time at Real Madrid should he choose to sign with the Los Blancos this summer.
