Racist Chinese Detergent Ad Raises Alarm

The Ad which seemed like any other normal Ad starts off starts off with a woman doing her laundry with a black man splattered with paint. The man then goes ahead to approach her and they both embrace then quickly she stuffs him in the washing machine and later comes out as a Chinese man.

A commercial for laundry soap that started airing this month in China is raising eyebrows – for all the wrong reasons. As the two exchange flirtatious glances, the woman beckons for the man to come closer. The man appears to catcall the woman, who is receptive to his advances as she flirtatiously calls him over.

When the cycle finishes, an Asian man, in a clean white t-shirt, emerges from the washing machine. On first thought, a laundry detergent commercial may not seem like a place for any message about race whatsoever. Instead, though, the woman feeds the man a gel detergent pack before forcing him into the machine and hopping on top of it to make sure that he can’t get out.

The Qaiobi brand is a detergent maker in China and as many other detergent brands tend to do, show casing how how their products are good and can whiten the most dirty clothes. The Qaiobi took it a step further and included John Boyega  a famous black actor turning into an Asian man once the wash was done.

It’s no secret that one part of Asian beauty standards involves valuing, even coveting, light skin-a look that’s promised by countless products pledging to brighten one’s pigmentation. While black actor John Boyega is prominent in the American movie posters for the film, he has been edited to take up much less space, in the Chinese version of the poster.

This advert has caused wide spread protest among the media and has deemed as racist. In my point of view, we have seen way more gruesome and demeaning adverts than this but It doesn’t exclude the fact that it gives off a racist vibe. I wonder what will come next, probably an advert about skin bleaching too.

Feel free to give us your opinion about this advert and how it affects our general public view of race and color.
