President Donald Trump says that he is ready to reopen the country after he believes that the curve on COVID-19 is being managed and is flattening. Currently, the US has a confirmed total of 640,000 cases with over 30,000 deaths.
At the daily White House virus briefing, Mr Trump said new reopening guidelines would be announced on Thursday after he speaks to governors. “We’ll be the comeback kids, all of us,” the president said. “We want to get our country back.”
Why Does Trump Wish to Reopen the Country Already?
“The data suggests that nationwide, we have passed the peak of new cases,” “Hopefully that will continue, and we will continue to make great progress.” Said President Trump. Asked why the US accounted for such a significant proportion of the global death toll of 136,908, Mr Trump accused other countries of lying about their mortality rate.
“Does anybody believe the numbers of some of these countries?” he said, naming China. He also said the US was looking into unverified reports that the coronavirus emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan rather than in a market.

US media have reported that the US embassy in Beijing raised concerns about safety at two laboratories in Wuhan. However, on Tuesday General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that US intelligence services believed it was more likely that the virus occurred naturally.
America was previously slated to be reopened on the 1st of May though now the president says that some states should be able to get back to normal activity and business considering the number of cases registered.
When questioned whether it was too soon to reopen the nation, the president said that there is also death in keeping the country closed. He went ahead to mention that mental health was taking a toll on many. He cited how the Center for Suicide hotlines are blowing up.
Millions of Americans have lost their jobs due to lockdown measures across the country, and unemployment numbers are at record levels.
As the governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer is dealing with an increase of riots with people demanding that stay-at-home guidelines be lifted, some governors in other states like Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania have issued directives to their people ordering that they move with face masks if they are to go into the public.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said large gatherings such as sports events and concerts would probably not be allowed in the city until 2021. President Trump said that he will have a meeting with the governors of most states to get a clear picture of how best they can go about reopening the nation.
