Egypt Air flight 804 traveling from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar with 56 passengers and 10 crew members on board, the airline has said.

The Associated Press news agency quoted anonymous Egyptian aviation officials on Thursday as saying the plane crashed in the Mediterranean Sea.

Confirmation of the plane crash was later accepted by the officials and a search is now underway according to the news agency.

According to Egypt Air, the plane took off from Paris’ Charles De Gaulle Airport shortly after 11pm local time.

The plane had 56 passengers, including one child and two infants, and 10 Egypt Air employees, the airline said via Twitter. Egypt Air tweeted the nationalities of the passengers as follows: 15 from France, 30 from Egypt, one from the U.K, one from Belgium, two from Iraq, one Kuwaiti, one from Saudi Arabia, one from Sudan, one from Chad, one from Portugal, one from Algeria and one from Canada.

At 4:26am, rescue teams affiliated with the Egyptian armed forces have received an SOS message from the emergency unit of the missing plane,” the airline said in a tweet. However, Egyptian army later denied detecting a distress signal from the missing plane, according to AFP news agency.

The plane was an Airbus A320 was flying at 37,000 feet when it disappeared 16km after entering Egyptian airspace, the airline said. The A320 is one of the most used Airbus planes. It is a single-aisle plane that usually seats about 150 people and is used for short- and medium-range flights around the world. Nearly 4,000 are in operation, according the company’s website.
