BREAKING: Besigye Arrested in Kampala City
Following the recent debates and little heated indirect confrontation with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Ret. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye made his way into town at around 2p.m today.
He insisted to head into the city center by walking there from the Jinja road traffic lights instead of being driven there. The DPC of CPS claims he issued an order to inform FDC to use another route into the city due to the high concentration of businesses and traffic into and out of the city but Dr. Kizza Besigye insisted and was arrested.
This incited a lot of resistance from his supporters who police responded to with several loud canisters of tear gas and rubber bullets. A lot of loud bullets were heard being fired in the air. The chaos kept spreading all over the city as Dr. Besigye was man handled, detained to Kiira road police and taken to his home in Kasangati.
The police have not given any reason for detaining him and police spokesperson Onyango has claimed that Besigye has not been under any arrest yet the photos show otherwise. Erias Lukwago and Amama Mbabazi have heavily condemned the arrest of Dr. Besigye at such a crucial time towards the elections.
Business has been slightly paralysed with people running to find the easiest way out of up town areas of Kampala city, vehicles stuck in heavy traffic, multiple casualties of the chaos, hysteria but the situation is slowly coming back to normal ahead of the anticipated “peaceful” elections. Several security officials have promised peaceful stable days towards and after the elections.
Police has been deployed heavily around the city and down town, with some of the traders around Arua park being encouraged to close and evacuate just in case though most have refused since they believe the disturbance was only up town. Military police is being deployed in several other places like Wandegeya and on standby.
Dr. Kizza Besigye is heading to Nabagereka School in Mengo later and is rumoured to have been heading to Makerere University. In the just concluded interview a moment ago he has informed journalists that he is heading back to the city centre to campaign as planned and he believes the police is operating out of law but that won’t stop him.
Monday 15:40 Makerere University students are burning most of President Yoweri Museveni’s posters after the recent events, there’s chaos and those taking photos are being forced to erase them.
Monday 18:00 Besigye is currently stranded in his vehicle at Wandegeya, a local city suburb. He has been denied access to Makerere University which is just next to the suburb, Mengo and Kisekka market (downtown Kampala). There is a stale mate as more crowds grow, more tear gas and rubber bullets are being fired to disperse the crowd.
Monday 18:20 The Wandegeya LC chairman was hurt after his speech to let the campaign go on and was taken to Wandegeya police station by the police. Another unidentified man fainted and failed to gain consciousness as crowds tried to help him, he has been taken away by the police ambulance. All traffic going through Wandegeya is on pause or advised to find alternate routes.
Monday 19:30 First probable brutally injured and unknown reported dead victim. If victim was wrongly hurt by the police, previous similar events over the years such as the Makerere University and Buganda strikes have shown civilian death to be very detrimental in reactions and gatherings, We’ll confirm soon.
