5 common reasons why you have difficulties sleeping at night
Stress is one of the most common reasons for insomnia and it can be quite hard to eliminate its consequences. The excessive excitation during the day can make you sleepless throughout the night. Moreover, stress may be followed by depression that complicates the situation even more.
If you suffer from insomnia because of stress, you may try to fence yourself from irritants. If you want to get some sleep, refuse watching TV before going to bed. You can also massage your temples with lavender oil or take a warm bath with chamomile flowers and sea salt.
Creating a comfortable atmosphere for sleeping can also help you. Let the fresh air into the room, get rid of all sources of light, and reduce any noise to have a healthy sleep.
2. Back pain
Chronic back pain is a condition in which you simply can’t find a comfortable position for sleep. It may be caused by a back injury, wrong position while sitting, muscle weakness, etc. The reality is that this condition requires chronic back pain treatment that usually includes medication and physical therapy.
You can also try to make your sleeping place more comfortable. Replace your regular mattress with the orthopedic model. If your back pain is accompanied by neck pain, you can also try to sleep on an orthopedic pillow.
3. Excessive caffeine intake
Many people can’t live without coffee and consume halons of it every day. But the reality is that even a cup of coffee before bedtime can drive away a healthy sleep. It doesn’t mean that you should refuse coffee at all but it is better to drink it in the morning.
You should also know that coffee is not the only product that contains caffeine. That’s why you should avoid tea, cocoa, chocolate, Coca-Cola, and energy drinks at least three hours before bedtime if you want to fall asleep on time.
Nightmares are considered one more common cause of insomnia. Fear of nightmares makes the body more actively resist sleep. But the most terrible dreams are not those where an alien killer maniac attacks you in a decaying house.
The scariest dreams usually about events from real life that are developing illogically. The most effective way to get rid of these nightmares is to free your head from uncontrolled thoughts. Meditation and relaxation techniques can be very beneficial for your sleep. If you are not fond of them, you can also try yoga or Pilates.
5. Inappropriate food intake
The constant work of our bodies depends on the food we eat. But we simply don’t know the composition of all the foods and some of them can contain components that interfere with the proper functioning of our bodies.
Moreover, if you eat before bedtime, you may not be able to fall asleep because the body can’t rest while the digestion process is active. But you should know that a feeling of hunger can also lead to insomnia. If you feel hungry right before going to bed, a glass of warm milk with honey will be a perfect meal.
If this is not enough for you, try to eat at least a few hours before going to sleep. You will not be hungry at bedtime, and the digestion process will be completed until you fall asleep.
