Horizon Zero Dawn is believed to be among the few video games getting its own movie soon as Sony continues to gear up for a massive expansion for its various PlayStation IPs into cinema.
According to a new report by Giant Freakin Robot, first-party developer Guerilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn is next in line to get the live-action treatment, with the hope being that a movie based on hero Aloy will prove to be as successful on the big screen as the property has been in the gaming sphere.
The outlet claims to have learned from a trusted and anonymous source that the 31st-century tale is joining other exclusive licenses such as FromSoftware’s cult-favourite Demon’s Souls as getting a big-budget adaptation, with more potentially on the way.
Unfortunately, the reports about Horizon Zero Dawn getting its own movie are still not yet confirmed and are considered to be just a rumour since none of the official sources has come out to state so about the news.
However, since Sony has steadily in the last years poured more resources into its films and TV shows and there are clear signs they wish to continue to do so for the foreseeable future for their PlayStation properties, there could be a chance that Horizon Zero Dawn may get its own movie.
Aside from Horizon, other popular Sony titles such as Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us are both already getting their own TV shows and movies respectively.
Uncharted is due to open in theatres next year and sees Tom Holland cast as central protagonist and treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Mark Wahlberg will co-star as Drake’s friend and mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan in a tale being billed as an origin story, of sorts.
Meanwhile, premium US network HBO is taking on The Last of Us franchise. The news was confirmed this year though the streaming network has shared little about what it will entail.
Horizon Zero Dawn getting its own movie
For those who don’t know what Horizon Zero Dawn is all about, it’s a 2017 action role-playing game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The plot follows Aloy, a young hunter in a world overrun by machines, who sets out to uncover her past.
In the game, players get to use ranged weapons, a spear, and stealth to combat mechanical creatures and other enemy forces. The game also has an open world which means you get to explore and find lots of hidden treasure including taking on side quests. It was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017 and Microsoft Windows in 2020.
The game itself is very interesting and has an expansive story that keeps the player glued as they battle their way through a machine infested wasteland in hopes to find out the truth about the past and why the old civilisation collapsed.
Horizon Zero Dawn was praised by critics for its open world, story, visuals, combat, characterisation, and the performance of voice actress Ashly Burch; however, the dialogue, melee combat, and character models received some criticism. The game won numerous awards and sold over 10 million copies by February 2019, making it one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games.
A sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, is currently scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2021 with an announcement trailer released in June 2020.
We can only hope the project gets picked up by Sony and since the reports are still considered rumours, the chance of it happening is still sketchy. None the less, if Horizon was to be taken on, it may be a box office contender. Only time will tell as we await more information.
